"Excellent fast and professional care in the ED"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My adult son participated in the Busselton 100, as part of the Busselton Triathlon Festival. He was in a team and did the 18km run. About half an hour after he finished he started vomiting and ended up dry retching for about two hours as he had nothing left to bring up. He was very weak, dehydrated and unable to get the vomiting under control.

We took him to Busselton ED where he was vomiting while being triaged. The triage nurse rang someone else straight away and despite a busy evening, he was taken straight through to a bed. The triage nurse put a line in and gave him some medication to stop the vomiting straight away. Another nurse then visited him as did one of the emergency doctors and he was put on IV fluids. The dr did a more detailed examination and the took bloods to make sure this was only related to his running event and that nothing else was going on. The medication and fluids did the trick and he was able to be discharged.

The care we received was exemplary and all the staff were friendly, thorough, and caring. A special thanks to the triage nurse who got things moving so quickly. We travelled from Perth for the event and were staying at a motel and it was terrible to see him so weak after celebrating earlier in the afternoon. We really saw the best of country health care. I work in another part of the WA health system and was so appreciative of the care shown. Even the admin clerk was fantastic! Maybe I need a sea change!

Dear Concerned about care,

It is very kind of you to take the time to write a comment in Care Opinion. I am so glad we were able to see him quickly and he responded well to the treatment.

You must have been very proud of his achievement of running 18km, only to then become unwell which would have been worrying.

The staff will be delighted with your comments and I will be sure to pass them on to all.

Hope he continues in good health.

Yours sincerely,

Caroline Booker
