I am a retired Mental Health Nurse, getting close to the Big 80. Experiencing some of the age related health issues. I confess to have a rather casual attitude to apparent minor health issues!!
Some weeks ago I grazed my right shin, causing some slight bleeding. When I returned home I cleansed the wound and placed a Betadine dressing thereon. I continued with my daily 'routine' including dog walks to the beach, where I would also have an immersion. On about day six, the 'forgotten' Band Aid parted company from my wounded leg.....On inspection, it appeared pussy and inflamed. Next morning I attended Broome Hospital ED for attention. Just after I had given my details to the Triage Nurse, I was 'accosted' by lovely Nurse Practitioner 'Susan' who informed me of the Hospital Avoidance Scheme now operating whereby older patients could avoid the general delays associated with ED. I received a therapeutic growling for not seeking attention earlier, especially having recently had an episode of Cellulitis!
I was treated with great professional and educational friendliness and returned on the nest few days for follow up dressings. Susan explained the scheme and I must state how impressed I am with this. It is long overdue that us 'Oldies' who have generally worked and paid their way in society received special care, generally reserved for other apparently entitled groups.
I must commend the Patient Avoidance Scheme and hope it receives appropriate funding to ensure a successful future operation
