I feel the mental side of being on a waiting list is far worse than the physical side, I worry about it everyday, I am scared, anxious and stressed. Here is my story so far:
I am on the wait list for cardiac surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital, I have a leaky aorta heart valve deemed serious, which has caused an enlarged heart which is then causing the pulmonary heart valve to also leak, will also need 2 or 3 bypasses. Pre-op tests revealed I also have issues with my Carotid arteries in the neck which supply blood to the brain with both left and right >80% stenosis, blocked. I have read, that the estimated risk of stroke or total carotid occlusion is 46% per year in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis greater than or equal to 80%.
My Current Official wait time for Category 1 Urgent Cardiac Surgery is now almost 200 days, more than 300 days since referral. Although I have had my urgent category changed four times so far, was Category 1 mid last year, then changed to Category 2 a few days after that, changed back to Category 1 a couple of months later and have now been advised, although no letter to confirm that I am Category 2. I was referred to the Vascular surgeon late last year, but not added to the vascular surgery wait list until late last month although no letter to confirm this has been received. I have not received a date for either surgery yet.
My Cardiologist at another hospital has been great and is also concerned about delay in surgery, writing in a letter to Fiona Stanley Hospital:
Their cardiac risk may escalate exponentially as their left ventricular function declines; and, I request our vascular and cardiothoracic surgical colleagues do what they can to expedite their surgery, to intervene before irreversible decline in ventricular function.
I am also happy with the medical teams I have seen at Fiona Stanley Hospital, they have all been helpful and professional. The only issue I have is the doctors give you an estimated time you are likely to wait for surgery, which appears to be no where near reality.
I understand that there are many patients on waiting lists at Fiona Stanley Hospital, and some may be in a worse condition than me, (although it is hard to imagine how) I know I need to wait my turn, but when I look at the median waiting time for Cardiothoracic Surgery is 73 days and 90 percentile is 235 days, surely I must be getting close for urgent surgery which has a benchmark of 30 days.
Who is making waiting lists decisions at Fiona Stanley hospital? Doctors or Administrators/accountants/government officials?
Why has my surgery category been changed four times and does it mean every time it has changed I go to the bottom of the list for that category?
