"Food while I was in hospital"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted for a day surgery procedure at Geraldton Hospital this week.  My complaint is not about the care I received which I felt was excellent at all times.   I was asked 3 different times if I had a dietary requirement, one at pre admission, once on the phone and once on the day.   Each time I said vegan.    It was noted.

After the procedure which didn't finish till after lunch, I was given a tray of ham and cheese sandwiches and jelly and custard and juice.   I asked if they had anything else to eat.  It seemed the staff were sympathetic but said that's all there is to eat.    By that stage I had been fasting over 18 hours and was feeling faint and blood sugar had dropped.    I wasnt allowed to walk to the hospital kiosk to buy something.   Eventually my spouse turned up with a banana to get me through.

My complaint is if the hospital is not able to provide me with a vegan meal, why did they ask 3 times and noted it.   I feel they could have just said look we can't guarantee that or don't provide plant based options.   I would have happily packed my own food which I really needed for my recovery.    I wasn't expecting anything fancy or difficult anyway.    I feel they could have given me fruit, toast with dairy free spread and Vegemite, hummus and crackers or baked beans on toast.    All items I believe are readily available and easy to prepare.

Also, I wonder about the quality of food provided in a health setting.   I'm sure they have dietitians overseeing the menu, and while I'm not a dietitian I would say that ham, cheese in white bread with a side of sugary custard and jelly is hardly healthy food.

Dear danceqc38

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion and for your kind words regarding the care you received whilst an inpatient in our day surgery ward.

I would like to apologise that you were not given the correct meal choice during your admission and for any distress this caused you. Providing all patients with meals that they have requested, and which meets nutrition and quality standards is an important part of delivering care in hospitals and I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations in this regard.

The hospital has standards for food service and menu development to ensure that we offer nutritious menus to enable adequate intakes, promote recovery and good health outcomes. These standards are overseen by our dietetics staff.

If you would like to discuss further or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me on 08 9956 2369.

Thank you again for reaching out to us.

Kind Regards

Marie Norris

Thank you Marie for your response. I still find it hard to believe ham and cheese in white bread sandwich with jelly and custard is considered healthy food by dietitians. How about yogurt, fruit, wholemeal bread with cheese and salad or chicken? I believe processed meats are considered carcinogenic by the WHO, yet hospitals seem to think it's ok to serve them to patients.
