"Presenting with back and leg pain"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My partner started experiencing severe back and leg pain recently.

We presented at the GRH ED a couple of days later and were seen quite quickly.

The Dr seemed uninterested in my partner's pain they did a brief examination and I recall said, we don't really deal with this here. Which I was taken aback by, we had been sent home with a script for ant inflammatory and told my partner to take Panadol...... we had explained the pain meds to the triage nurse my partner had been taking had not seemed to touch the pain.

At no point was an Xray or scan offered.

We went home very unimpressed. My partner then had an extremely painful night.

My partner went to our family Chiro (something it seemed the DR in ED dismissed at the time). The chiro sent my partner straight for an Xray and resulted in major injury to their lower vertebrae.

To say either of us are extremely disappointed is an understatement. We do not present to ED at a whim could count on my hand how many times we have been as a family in the last 20yrs.

Dear correspondencepx83

Thank you for reaching out to us on Care Opinion.

I was disappointed to read your story of your partner’s experience. It does not reflect our aim to provide thorough and compassionate care at Geraldton Hospital Emergency Department. We always hope that consumers feel they have been provided with a full assessment of their conditions, appropriate treatment and advice and we regret that was not your experience on this occasion.

I would like to speak with yourself, or your partner to hear more regarding your experience. With your partner’s consent, I would then be able to arrange a review of their presentation and ensure we can make improvements to our service if needed. My name is Dr Ranjit Paul, I am the Director Medical Services at Geraldton Hospital. I can be contacted on (08) 9956 8125 or you can email me at WACHS-MidwestMD@health.wa.gov.au

I do hope to hear from you or your partner soon.

Regards,

Dr Ranjit Paul
