Recently on a weeknight evening, my parent was taken via Ambulance to the emergency department of Caboolture Hospital following a fainting episode with significant head trauma including bleeding on their brain and facial fractures. Unfortunately their family was not contacted until mid-morning the following morning. The hospital states they did not have the correct contact details for family in their system but I felt no-one looked for my parent's phone or made any concerted effort to locate any family.
Unfortunately this was just one of a number of concerning incidents that I recall have occurred during my parent's stay. The others are as follows:
On my parent's second day on the ward, they were exposed to a covid positive patient who was swabbed in ED but, I understabd the ward had omitted to check the result before admitting them to my parent's 4 bed bay. This resulted in my parent having to be isolated as a "close contact".
After spending 4 days with my parent on the ward, I contracted Covid and was unable to visit them. I called the ward multiple times requesting a call from someone in my parent's treating team to update me on a plan of care for them, no-one returned my call.
Another family member visited and after liaising with one of the nurses, it was identified that there was no NOK noted in my parent's file. This is despite me providing all of those details to the emergency department and to the ward nurse when we went through the admission paperwork on arrival to ward 3A.
I feel this impeded timely communication between us and my parent's treating team and I felt this caused a great deal of anxiety for family members trying to understand their loved one's condition when they could not tell us themself due to their head injury.
Finally, after almost 3 days trying to get in contact with someone, leaving multiple messages with staff at the Nurses station (via phone) and leaving a phone message for one of the social workers to please assist us in receiving an update on my parent, I received a call from one of the doctors.
Although I feel it would seem that the direct Nurse to patient care is adequate, in my opinion, much needs to be done to improve communication and logistics to ensure patients and their concerned families are receiving the support they require.
