"Physiotherapy Care - Pregnancy & GDM"

About: Royal Hospital for Women / Maternity Services Division Royal Hospital for Women / Physiotherapy Department

(as the patient),

I want to give a huge shoutout to the physiotherapy team at the Royal Hospital for the awesome GDM exercise classes and initiatives they have started up. A huge thank you to Sky for introducing me to the program and to Sky, Julia, Emily and Ella for the awesome classes they host each week. These exercise classes have really helped me stay fit and manage the GDM diagnosis well through my pregnancy. It is amazing to see the positive impact each session has on my blood sugars. My confidence in exercising while pregnant has grown so much under the team's careful guidance and I find that I am so much more motivated to exercise now that I have access to the classes. I have also noticed that the exercises have really helped to resolve some aches and pains I was having previously. I think I'm probably stronger now than I was pre-pregnancy. It is great to have experts guiding us through safe exercises, checking our form, monitoring our progress and providing tips to support our individual needs. The team are so helpful, kind and they make the exercise classes fun. It is also a nice way to meet other women going through a similar experience. I wish more women had access to these classes! Please think about offering classes to women that don't have GDM too. There are so many benefits to the classes and I think they have really helped me to stay fit, mobile and healthy through the final weeks of my pregnancy.

Dear ocean123

Thank you for sharing your experience with our new exercise program for gestational diabetes at The Royal Hospital for Women. What fantastic feedback!

As you say, there are many things that impact a woman's confidence or access to exercise in pregnancy so we are so pleased to hear how this supervised option for you has made such a difference to your health and pregnancy (and to bub's health too).

We certainly hoped it would help to better manage blood sugars, and improve your confidence but to also ease some aches and pains - what a bonus!

You have a great point about providing supervised exercise options for women without GDM as well. Just last week one of our medical co-directors asked how we might be able to do this! Hopefully we will have an update about this soon. I wonder whether you are interested in providing any additional insights about how this might work, you could get in touch with the awesome GDM team via our physiotherapy email SESLHD-PhysioRHW@health.nsw.gov.au, we would love to have your input.

Thanks for taking the time to share so much of your insight and experience of our new service. Sky, Julia, Ella and Emily will be thrilled to hear about how these sessions have impacted your pregnancy journey.

We look forward to seeing you back in class, and to follow-up after the birth of your baby
