"Dirty big rubbish bin"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital

(as the patient),

I was in the lift with another person when the cleaner came with a big rubbish bin full of rubbish without a lid wanting to get into the lift. I asked the cleaner to please use another empty lift since they are carrying a dirty bin. The cleaner got mad at me and I recall they told me rudely, if you don't want it get out of the lift! Seriously, some common sense and consideration... who would want to be stuck in the same lift with a dirty and smelly huge garbage bin? Can't the hospital provide a separate lift just for dirty utilities without having to share it with hospital staff, patients and visitors? I believe the new building have, why can't it be implemented in the old Parkes bldg? There is a single lift at the far end, why can't it be used for dirty huge bins? I feel its just disgusting, unsanitary and unsettling. Plus, in my opinion, you have a very rude hospital cleaner.

Dear AngryPoster,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. The POWH Domestic Services Manager, has undertaken a thorough investigation and spoken with each waste collector personally. He apologises for your experience and has taken the opportunity to remind staff members not to enter the lift with waste bins if there is another person already present in the lift.

We apologise for the manner in which you were spoken to by our staff member, and we have reminded the whole domestic services team of how to interact in a polite and courteous manner with patients, families and other staff members.

We are fortunate to have dedicated facilities within the new acute services building. In light of this, the Parkes Building is no longer seeing the volume of patients and their families staff etc that it once used to, we believe that the reduced flow of traffic through this building will allow us to manage the transportation of waste bins safely in this area without disruption to other lift users.

Kind regards

Adrianna Scotti-Roberts
