Birthing baby at Esperance. 

I would have appreciated longer appointments, more Midwifery input like informed choices, around going over my due date. More breastfeeding support, I was sent home before my baby was feeding well and had no home visiting midwife appts. 

I’d have liked more options like waterbirth, homebirth and Midwifery Continuity and home visits as packing up a newborn and driving into appts felt unsafe when tired postnatally, and having to be around sick medical ward patients. Or having nurses who are not midwives answer my bell who can’t help with newborn tests or breastfeeding. I felt uncomfortable that ppl next door were coughing and possibly contagious to my newborn baby. I’d rather have care in my home environment or with other maternity clients only. More family centred care. My unvaccinated partner wasn’t allowed to any of my care. 🥺

Dear Ruralmomma

Thank you for taking the time to share your birthing experience at Esperance Health Campus (EHC) with us. I apologise that your experience of our service was not what you were expecting and you were left dissatisfied. Patient Safety is the highest priority for our clinical teams. We like to work closely with our patients to meet their needs whilst optimising patient safety.

Consumer feedback is very important to us and I would like to let you know that we will be discussing the scope of maternity care available through EHC with the midwives in the coming weeks. All suggestions and requests from our consumers are taken seriously and reviewed. It is important to note that any change in the scope of care we provide through EHC will take some planning to ensure it can be safely resourced and delivered. This will require careful consideration and collaboration with midwives, nurses, GPs and specialist obstetricians. We are currently implementing a place-based model of care which will increase the focus on individual care and improve service delivery.

I would like to let you know about the consumer advisory group we have operating called, the District Health Advisory Council. We would welcome new members to assist us with providing a vital link between consumer, carer and community. This provides excellent opportunities for consumers to contribute to health service development and supports a pathway for our health service teams to learn from our consumers. Firstly, Thank you for your thoughtful response! I don’t see myself as a “patient”, as birthing my baby was not a sickness but a normal physiological process us women go through. Is there a director of Midwifery? We are all doing well thank you
