"Disrespectful midwife"

About: Armadale Hospital / Antenatal Clinic & Boodjari Yorgas Family Care Armadale Hospital / Maud Bellas Maternity Ward & Neonatal Nursery

(as the patient),

I had a caesarean recently. This is my second child but first time experiencing a caesarean. I lost alot of blood and had a few complications. Once I was on the ward I had a midwife that I felt was extremely cruel and plain mean. I recall they made me feel like me and my new baby were scum. The only time I called the nurse was for pain relief and another to change my baby’s nappy as I could not get out of bed. When I asked the midwife to change the nappy, I felt they angrily asked where my wipes and nappies were, it was like I ruined their day. My baby was very unsettled and the midwife made a comment that my baby was just starving. At this point I started to cry. My nipples were sore and cracked and I had been trying to get my milk in for 3 hours straight. I was trying my hardest. I asked if we could give my baby a little formula. I recall the midwife replied seemingly angrily yet again and asked what did I do with my first born!?

I felt the midwife was rough with needles and rough with changing my dressing. Based on my experience, I feel they should not work in a area where women already feel stressed and vulnerable.

I have never felt disrespected like this ever. I don't need an apology but I don't want another new mum to experience what I did. Apart from that seemingly horrid staff member, every other midwife on the ward was just magic and the most caring. A special shout out to Nina, Deb and the Boodjari Yorgas team who made me feel extremely loved and cared for :)

Dear hawkwr34,

Congratulations on the birth of your second child.

This experience should be such a special time in your life, and whilst it was pleasing to read that Nina, Deb and the Boodjari Yogas team made you feel loved and cared for, the interactions with one of our midwives clearly did not display kindness and respect which made me very sad to read.

I can only begin to imagine how hard it must have been after the caesarean, blood loss and complications, dealing with sore and cracked nipples, to be treated without either kindness or respect when asking for support with nappy changing and feeding options for your new addition. Alongside this to read of the lack of kindness when dealing with your wound care, made me even sadder.

Whilst I note that you don’t need an apology, I do wish to take further action here so we can learn to improve our care for future mums as nobody should feel disrespected, let alone at what should be such a special time in one’s life. I therefore welcome the opportunity to discuss your experiences in more detail and encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison Service on (08) 9391 1153 or AKG_ConsumerLiaison@health.wa.gov.au
