I have always hoped for expert care. I am diabetic and have been so for many years. I believe this affects the care I receive. So late last year and faced with chronic constipation, went to Bass coast hospital and tests were undertaken. A diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis was provided and I was referred to a doctor. I never actually saw them, and I believe they dismissed my complaint as diabetes related. It seemed the doctor went out of their way to dismiss the condition, but did no tests of their own. Since then I have had shingles in one of my eyes misdiagnosed- it has to be diabetes related as I have diabetes! Most recently I have had what I thought was food poisoning, but I felt the doctors dismissed it as diabetes related and no tests were prescribed. I visited ED on a recent night, and it became evident that they were not going to examine me, I recall one doctor insisted that I was being ridiculous in not accepting their diagnosis so I asked to be discharged. I went to my local GP who organised a CT scan, and guess what? I have colorectal cancer. In my opinion, if these medical experts had investigated twelve months earlier I would not be in the predicament I am in (currently waiting for a bed in the colorectal ward of another hospital). Rather than evidence based investigation I feel I have not been provided with quality care and simply labelled due to having diabetes. I accept any diagnosis based on evidence. I feel this has not been afforded to me.
