"Waiting time for cataract surgery"

About: Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Ophthalmology Department

(as the patient),

After having a cataract removal recently in my left eye I have had 2 cancelled follow up appointments rescheduled only to find out now that my right eye may not be done until end of January next year.

I have been left with not being able to wear any kind of glasses due to them being multi focal and so blurred vision. I cannot drive myself anywhere, relying on others to drive me everywhere when they are available so am therefore stuck at home doing absolutely nothing just about every day.

Unable to read anything unless in large writing, unable to knit or sew which I do quite a lot, cannot see or do anything on my computer. Due to blurred vision am taking 4 or more Panadol each day because of headaches caused by this. I also cannot take on any casual work that I have been offered for some extra income because I need to be able to work on a computer or be able to read very small writing. I understand the doctors and nurses have all been told this. I am so annoyed. I believe you obviously have to be almost blind to get in earlier.

At this rate for myself it will be almost 5 months between surgeries when I have heard and read that when cataracts in both eyes can be done within 2 weeks of each other Especially when multi focal glasses are worn. Can’t have multi focal only in one side as this makes the vision even worse. Even got told to get the cheap magnifying glasses for reading. I found these are absolutely useless when you need something in between the magnifying that they do.

So I am left with headaches every day and not being able to do anything because I cannot focus on anything properly. In my opinion, this is not good enough.

Dear Blurryeyed66,

I am terribly sorry to read of the struggles you are experiencing with your delayed cataract surgery. And I am also very sorry to read that we cancelled two of your follow-up appointments.

I have spoken with the ophthalmology team who are experiencing huge demand for services and long waiting times in the context of staffing shortfalls, and we are discussing what they require to help to get this waiting list under control. This is not going to help you in the immediate term – I would just like you to know that I am aware of the issue, agree that it is unacceptable and I reassure you we are trying to address this issue ASAP.

It is unclear to me if you have received the appropriate follow-up for your first surgery after your cancelled appointments – can you please contact our Patient and Family Liaison team on 9431 2787 with your details so that we can action this for you?

In the meantime, please take care and we will operate on you as soon as we are possibly able.

Kind regards,

Ged Williams
