Pregnant for the first time, I started bleeding at around 9 weeks. I went to the Antenatal clinic, where my pregnancy was being monitored. I recall the consultant wouldn't even come out of their office. The receptionist told me to go to AE. I arrived at AE with extreme pain and heavy bleeding. Triage told me to wait on a chair, it seemed despite the fact that I was screaming in pain. After over 30 min of waiting I went to the waiting area toilet and miscarried in there by myself. After that they let me through, put me on a bed and after I miscarried the remaining tissue, they put it in a plastic jar and left it on a table, next to my bed. After that I managed to have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby, but ended up having a hysterectomy afterwards. Long story short, going back for a checkup, with the same consultant, they told me that now I have no uterus, so I am basically like a man. And I recall they started laughing.

I am very sorry to hear of the terrible experiences you had on multiple occasions when you attended the Kalgoorlie Health Campus. Can I take this opportunity to offer you my personal sympathies for your miscarriage and subsequent hysterectomy. These experiences must have been very distressing and I commend you for following up with our service so that we can make necessary improvements and prevent these situations from happening to anyone else.

We will share your story and your experiences with our clinical teams so that they are reminded about the importance of sensitively approaching the care and treatment of women who have had a miscarriage and women who have had surgeries that may impact of their sense of identity (e.g. hysterectomy, mastectomy).
