"Paediatric care"

About: Child Health (Primary Health - Katanning)

(as a parent/guardian),

We had an appointment with a clinician at Katanning Hospital.

From the moment we walked in to the appointment, I found they were cold, judgmental and unprofessional. I felt they spoke to us like we were stupid and blamed our child's development issues all on us as parents, when we have nothing but love and support for our child.

It seemed they also suggested that we were silly to be having another baby. Not that the current pregnancy was planned, nor was it any of their business that required any input from them.

I felt they didn't even try to interact with our child, they just barked orders at us, they didn't listen nor care what we had to say. I recall they would also poke and prod our child without any communication. They made our child feel uncomfortable and us, unwanted and unheard.

Based on my experience, they should not be working with children!

Dear sagittacs95,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your family’s story with us. We view feedback from our community as an opportunity to identify areas for improvement and we are always grateful to receive it, be it negative or positive.

I am very sorry that you have had such an unpleasant experience with this child health clinician at Katanning Hospital and I apologise unreservedly. This behaviour does not reflect the WACHS values of community, compassion, quality, integrity, equity and curiosity.

It is always our intention to treat all of our clients and their families and carers with kindness, courtesy and respect as we know that you are our allies in the delivery of safe, person centred and high quality health care. As the Director of Population Health I am very concerned about your experience and keen to get to the bottom of what has occurred here. I would appreciate the opportunity to investigate this matter furthers so can I ask you to please contact me directly via phone: 9842 7531 or email: Sylvia.Lennon@health.wa.gov.au. It is very important to us that all our clients and their families feel confident and comfortable to attend our services as soon as they need them.

Thank you again for your feedback

Sylvia Lennon
