I’m from Exmouth and chose Fiona Stanley to have my first child at. I am so glad I chose this hospital due to the following event;
I arrived just past midnight when my waters broke and I was then induced later that morning in the MFAU birthing suites. After 14 hours or so of labour, a midwife named Jenn checked how dilated I was and she discovered my baby was breech. Throughout my entire pregnancy I was always told bub was head down, which obviously wasn’t the case! Even earlier that same morning a doctor told me they felt his head. So when Jenn discovered he was breech I was so shocked and surprised. From that point on my memory is hazy with so many people entering the room and new faces. Paperwork to sign and questions to answer every which way. My partner was thrown some scrubs and we were whisked away for an emergency C section. Every medical staff I interacted with during this ordeal was calm and reassuring. The anaesthetist Caitlinn was so lovely and reassuring. I was most impressed with how lovely everyone was along the way, it really kept me calm and I put all my trust in them.
Throughout the whole ordeal Jenn was there, she helped my partner with our baby before I could hold him and guided the both of us during those hectic moments. She came to visit bub and I the following evening to check in on us which was so sweet, and I was able to thank her personally.
I spent 2 more nights in hospital in my own room which was so comfortable whilst I was in such an uncomfortable state. Each midwife I saw was professional and kind. Irene helped me a lot with some latching issues bub had and taught us a lot of the basics like bathing.
My only suggestion for improvement is introducing a later term Ultrasound to confirm baby’s positions. I know you can opt to have additional scans at your own expense, but if you’re told by everyone from multiple hospitals throughout your pregnancy that baby is in the correct position then you’re not going to think to have another scan done to check. My last scan was at 19 weeks and I relied on medical staff to be able to detect if baby was breech or not by touch.
Please pass on our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped us, especially Jenn who raised the alarm as I believe if she had not, things could have been much worse!
"Received wonderful care during breech delivery"
