When my elderly partner was transported to Bunbury Regional Hospital after a fall with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung, I took all their medication with me but was told to take them home.
The next day when I visited my partner, their whole body was jerking uncontrollably. I inquired if they had been given their Parkinson's & Alzheimer's medication as I'd never seen them as bad as that. The first nurse I asked said it was nothing to do with them, the second said they didn't know, and it seemed that obviously, they weren't going to find out for me.
After a while, I found another nurse who looked up straight away in my partner's file on a table just outside the ward and found that my partner hadn't been given their medication. The nurse asked the second nurse (who had told me they didn't know), why, and, I recall, the answer was they couldn't find any, but when instructed to get down to the pharmacy now, they were able to get my partner's medication.
I found the ward for four patients very cramped, nowhere to sit and visit, and I felt that it was very hard to get someone to take my partner to the toilet when they needed to desperately go.
My experience was not a good one, in my opinion, they were not very helpful, I know the nurses have a lot to do, but I feel that just a small help when it is needed would go a long way.
