I first attempted recovery many years ago, more for my wife and children. This was unsuccessful, drinking and using with a month. My marriage fell apart, and I lost everything, marriage, children, house and job.
I attempted suicide in September the following year and put myself in residential care at Logan House in October that year. I completed the program and also aftercare a few years later. I haven’t drunk since. My addictions stem from my military career, joining at 17 having never drunk or used. I started using cannabis several years ago, not thinking I had a problem with it.
Fast forward to this year and I was using a quarter a day. I re-enlisted the help of Logan House, and did 6 weeks of residential care, followed by the 3-week day program.
I don't believe the 6-week program at Logan House is anywhere near long enough. I think there are too many court-ordered people trying to go against the rules, and treat it like jail. I also think there’s too much phone access. I believe there is using taking place by those court-ordered which drags others into it, especially the younger or those unable to speak up and defend themselves.
Logan House was still good, but I feel it could be a lot better. I had an outstanding Therapy Facilitator at Logan House. I got more from him in my first session than I did with my counsellor in my 6-month program.
I felt the Woolloongabba day programs and aftercare program were very good. In my experience, the 6-month program was so much better and more successful. I am currently 76 days clean and starting to study. Once again LLW has saved my sanity and life.
