"Prenatal care"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

What happened:

I chose to give birth at King Edward Memorial Hospital to my 3 kids, over the past 4 years. I've had a positive experience with the clinical care of all three pregnancies.

The MGP4 group took care of me for my last two pregnancies. I couldn't have asked for better care. My midwife, Sarah, looked after me until my daughter was born in early 2019. Sarah was clinically thorough. Sarah highlighted at every appointment the need for calling her when in any doubt about baby movements. I may have put off contacting the hospital for the following day without her encouragement. Now I understand the importance of her message and I tell my pregnant friends the same! Sarah had good active listening skills and this I appreciated. Thank you for your care.

In 2020, I was assigned Midwife, Lolita, with my most recent pregnancy and she was with me the whole journey until I gave birth to a healthy boy in January. Lolita was professional, confident, never rushed through our appointments, respected my needs and had a good calming presence which helped me feel less overwhelmed when I was in labour.

When things got complicated in the 2nd stage of labour which required other medical professional involvement, Lolita continued to be a constant calming presence and stood by me throughout. Thank you!

Carissa was the other midwife during my prenatal care and picked up that there was a potential growth restriction which was confirmed later.

What was good:

I liked the continuity of care; having the same midwife and team from start to finish. With this, a relationship of trust was built and I was more likely to do what was recommended, and feel calmer, compared with being with someone new each time. Calmer mum = calmer during pregnancy and attitude towards birth. I loved not having to wait for hours at the East wing clinic for a quick appointment. Instead, my midwife was able to be on time for every appointment.

What I felt could be better:

We had to wait a few hours before we transferred from the delivery suite to the ward; that was difficult waiting around. I think it was due to waiting for an available room.

Thank you once again!

Dear Happy Mother,

Congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your new baby. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS).

I am so pleased to hear that you had positive experiences with our Midwifery Group Practice 4 (MGP4) model of care, and it is lovely to hear that you received the care and continuity you needed to support you through your pregnancy and the birth of your baby. Our staff strive to provide our patients and their families with the support to achieve positive outcomes during their pregnancy journey, particularly when birthing plans are changed unexpectedly, such as your experience.

WNHS is incredibly proud of the maternity care that is provided by our staff and the way they work with our patients to achieve positive outcomes during the pregnancy and birthing journey. I will ensure your feedback is provided to Sarah, Lolita, Carissa and all involved in your journey.

Once again, thank you for providing us with this great feedback. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Regards,

Jodi Graham
