Recently my mother suffered a detached retina and needed emergency surgery. It was an extremely stressful time for her and made all the more difficult by being turned away by the other hospitals all due to lack of staff and ability to treat her.
Thankfully the on-call Doctor at one hospital was able to help mum with advice over the phone and instructed her to attend SJOGH Subiaco.
Mum was taken up to the DPU and was prepared for surgery, which was a huge relief. The staff rostered on the DPU that day were due to go home, however one nurse made the decision to stay hours late, to help and look after mum. The nurse told us she lived an hour's drive from her work, and had dogs at home that would be patiently waiting for their dinner! We are so grateful and want her to be acknowledged and know her actions are appreciated.
Mum is slowly recovering and making good progress.
