We worked with a pre-kindy family of ours in 2018 to organise a paediatrician referral regarding suspected global developmental delay behaviour. A referral to the paediatrician was made in 2018 was triaged as category 3 (appointment within 12months), this family still have no paediatrician appointment to support their child and isn’t likely to have an appointment before later this year. The referral is support by our CDS speech pathologist who submitted their report with the same concerns. I believe this child requires extensive early intervention, however, family and school are unable to access support until paediatrician makes their recommendation.

I acknowledge there is a delay in accessing this service and I am sorry that the family has not been able to receive the support that their child requires. This service has seen a significant increase in referrals in the last couple of years and WA Country Health Service Midwest has been working on strategies to assist in managing the demand.
