I was on my family holiday in the area when I was referred to Bunbury Hospital with acute abdominal pain. The Emergency Department (ED) was pretty busy in my opinion, but I was seen by triage immediately who confirmed that I’d already had pain relief. I waited for the better part of an hour in the ED which was no problem as I was reasonably comfortable and understood that there were a number of children to be fast-tracked through as well as a couple of more urgent patients that came through while I waited.
Once taken through to an ED bay I was assessed thoroughly and told it was suspected appendicitis. However, a CT was done with contrast injected which cleared me of appendicitis, thereby avoiding surgery. The surgical registrar explained the situation to me with my new diagnosis and I was told I’d be transferred to the ward for IV antibiotics for 24 hours.
I ended up staying for 48 hours. The nursing staff, as well as the domestic staff on the surgical ward, were really great and I’d like to thank them. In addition, I was seen by a number of doctors, a dietician and a pharmacist who all communicated with me very clearly about the next steps in my future treatment and long term management. I had an allergic reaction to the first antibiotic which was picked up on immediately by the astute nurses in the middle of the night.
Overall I felt that the hospital staff go above the expectations to provide excellent patient care and a good experience. I have been to a few hospitals including one overseas over the years and rate Bunbury as one of the best.
"Excellent patient care"
