I attended the Emergency Department at the Eye and Ear Hospital recently. I was in a great deal of pain and was seen promptly. The admission process was very tedious and I felt that the clerk had limited understanding as I had to repeat myself a number of times.
A Nurse then took over as they could see the amount of pain I was in and the lack of understanding of the Clerk.
My experience with the doctor was quite unpleasant. Identity check was not performed, hand hygiene was not performed and they touched my eyes with their bare hands of which puts myself at risk as well as themselves.
Medications were administered without my knowledge of what they were for and what they were. As a health professional, it was very evident that a number of standards were not practised by the registrar attending to me.
The registrar then sent me home with Chlorsig and I received a bill for it. Once again this was not voiced to me and I was not given the option. I would have preferred my situation to be explained appropriately and professionally. I also would've preferred to purchase my own Chlorsig as, being in the market, it is half the price I am being billed. To be honest, my encounter lacked compassion and was treated as a quantity of care rather than quality. I felt the assessment was rushed and I didn't have the opportunity to have a say in my care.
