Recently I had to attend a pre-admission clinic at Rockingham General Hospital. As this was going to take over several hours, lunch was offered in the form of sandwiches and there was no alternative. Biggest problem with this is that I am unable to eat sandwiches due to lack of saliva. Also, there are many people who are unable to eat bread for many health reasons. The only option available to me was a very small cup of horrible coffee.
I had day surgery at the same hospital and again the food offered was sandwiches. The alternatives were ice cream and yoghurt, the mug of coffee was somewhat better. I was asked if I brought my own soup when I told staff that is what I usually have.
At pre-admission for this procedure I had informed the staff that I have a special diet and a note was made of this. Also, when I rang to confirm my attendance I once again explained the need to have something other than sandwiches.
I realise that some of the problem is due to the hospital not having it's own kitchen, but as they are given plenty of notice surely something could be arranged.
How do they cater for people who are gluten or lactose intolerant?
It is about time hospitals catered to everyone, particularly in this day where gender and religious beliefs are recognised.
It seems to me that those of us who have dietary requirements have been forgotten.
The staff were very good and looked after me well, just the food issue and no one was able to offer a solution.
