I am a regular patient at Sydney Eye Hospital. Regular in that I am there almost every few weeks due to a very complex case of glaucoma. It concerns me that there is no real focus on the patients wellbeing or mental state especially those with complicated or ongoing cases.
I’m interested in knowing if Sydney Eye Hospital offers psychological services to regular patients who are experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety or depression as a result of their medical condition that is being managed through SEH.
I’m also interested to know if there are any support groups that could potentially be set up to assist those going through such difficult times.
Finally, I think it would be a massive benefit if there was more emphasis on the patients mental state during clinic visits. While I can appreciate the level of care the ophthalmologists at SEH provide, I also feel that the patients mental health and well being should be considered as part of the ongoing treatment these exceptional doctors provide. Even if it just comes down to referring them to other services if needed.
While a patients condition may seem okay or somewhat under control, there is a good chance the patient themselves are not okay. We should try and find ways to factor this in to the holistic level of care that is provided.
