After suffering a very bad brain stem stroke and spending 5 weeks in ICU and 5 weeks in a neuro acute ward I’ve come to rehab to get my life back and make some substantial gains in my stroke journey
I have been an inpatient for nearly 4 weeks now at the Angliss HospitalI am progressing ok but feel I need physiotherapy rehab at least 5-6 times per week. I am currently averaging 3-4 physiotherapy sessions per week. This is frustrating to say the least. I am here to get stronger and learn to walk again. This will not happen at the current rate of physio I’m receiving. Today I didn’t have any physiotherapy or (Occupational Therapy) OT at all.The only consistent rehab I’m receiving is speech therapy, where I am achieving huge progress. This whole situation is totally frustrating me. Without the family support I have I truly feel I would become very despondent.I feel very strongly about this lack of rehab as it is really impacting my progress. Also, I feel for the fantastic therapists, who really are dedicated and want to help all on the ward. Their hands are tied as far as more staff go. The system is letting them down and I’ve witnessed them becoming quite sad and stressed as they cannot do the job they are committed to doing.
I was a fit, healthy man, who used to run 1000 steps twice, two times a week.
My stroke was a result of a vertebral artery dissection, possibly due to an accident at the gym. So I’m keen to use my fitness to help in my recovery process.
I would appreciate you listening to my concerns and hope somehow we can overcome this lack of allied health support in Rehab.
