"Death of two family members on the same night"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My elderly uncle suddenly became unwell. He was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) passed away and unexpectedly and suddenly at FSH. Then approximately 3 hours later his distraught son suddenly passed away at home. Attempts were made to resuscitate him by St John Ambulance and they transported him to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH). I arrived at RPH ED to see what was going on, as it was hard to believe what I had been told over the phone by hysterical family members.

I found the ED nursing staff to be sensitive to our needs at this unbelievably sad time. Some of the nurses also became emotional. They went out of their way to make us all comfortable, made us drinks and brought us tissues, water etc. We were left alone to view the body in our own time in a private area.

Thank you nursing staff for your compassion.

Dear Gemini,

I am so very sorry that you and your family have experienced such grief in such a short period of time.

It must be difficult to comprehend to have both of your loved ones taken away from you in such an unexpected way.

I want to thank you for contacting us when you are experiencing such sadness and shock, it means a lot to staff when patients and their families write to us with such kindness.

I have already spoken to the manager of the Emergency Department at RPH and sent your story to her so that she also can pass your gratitude on to the staff who showed you and your family such compassion and respect.

Please accept my sincere condolences and gratitude.

Dori Lombardi

Acting Director of Nursing
