"Made to feel like the aged are just a nuisance"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Continence Nurse Royal Perth Hospital / Stomach, Bowel and Liver Care (Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

(as the patient),

I was referred by my GP to specialist services at RPH - Gastro and Continence Urology department.

At the Gastro clinic I spoke with a doctor on two occasions, and after a test appeared to be okay, I believe they Googled a diet for me to try, and to see them in about four weeks. I don’t smoke, drink, eat fast food and I exercise daily and eat quality food. Is that the best the doctor can do, Google a diet? No prognosis yet though.

At the Urology clinic I was interviewed by a nurse, and was then asked to keep records of my situation at home and report back which I did. I had a small test, then my information was given to a doctor and a script was given to the nurse for me. I did not see the doctor. I awoke in agony each morning and the medication was not effective.

My own GP said to me - I am from a third world country, but we would not let you suffer like this.

In my 60s, I feel totally devalued, I have no worth or value, but probably am a good tool for the young doctors to practice on.

I recently attended a workshop called “Nuts and Bolts” presented by two leading medical specialists in Prostate problems. If only the doctors I saw at the RPH had of been there, they might of learnt something of value to aid their medical calling.

Dear worthless,

I was really upset to read your story here in terms of your description of the way you felt you were treated here at RPH. Can I ask if you would mind contacting me so that we can discuss a way forward where we can ensure we meet your needs and see why the clinics were of such little value to you. I can be contacted on (08) 9224 2219.

I very much hope to be able to talk with you soon.

Update posted by worthless (the patient)

I had my third appointment with the Gastro clinic, and my third appointment with the Urology clinic in a few weeks time, so will finalise my response after that, but doubt I will return to either.

Update posted by worthless (the patient)

After over 6 months at the Gastro Clinic, I saw a total of three doctors. At my last visit, the doctor told me there was no cure for my condition, and I should visit the Pharmacy and get over the counter medicines, suggesting Imodium tablets, saying I could take up to 8 a day. He did not inform me of what condition he could not cure me of, and offered no assistance for the agony I have in my left hand side stomach area upon waking each day.

I talked to my Pharmacist, and he strongly suggested I see my GP and ask for a referral to a specialist.?

At the Incontinence Clinic, I had three appointments as above, saw a very nice incontinence nurse, and a doctor once, completed various things she wanted me to do, was given two separate prescriptions, but these have not worked.

I was discharged from the clinic and the doctor will complete a small procedure on me, and am on the waiting list for this. I had this procedure a year ago, but data screens between hospitals do not match up, so am hoping this may assist my condition.

The Bladder and Bowel Health Australia are assisting me, and a new book just published by a former medical person about the gut, may also help me.

R.P.H. has been the leader in treatment and research for many years, and is proud of its history, but to be told to go to a Chemist for help is not their finest day.

I may be able to request assistance from Fremantle Hospital as a public patient, but I have faith that there is someone in the medical world in Perth that will help me.

Because of my trips to the toilet in the night, I never get a nights sleep, and am tired all day long, combined with my sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stress and diabetes, I appear to be a candidate for possible heart problems.

Someone will help me....please

No response from my email to Exec Director, have applied through FOI (Freedom of Information) for medical file, and will give this to my new referral at Fremantle Hospital
