"Birth services in Broome"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

I had a fabulous experience using the midwife group practice to support my pregnancy and labour. I'd like the WA Health Department to better support women's rights and choice in labour and bring in the option and support for both home and water births. Women need to be able make a choice that's right for them. Birthing is an age old ability and by only having the option to birth in hospital the experience becomes too clinical and sterile. Going to the hospital is something that is done when you're unwell. There is no reason also why a water birth shouldn't be permitted if all parties are happy to participate.

Dear bobeella,

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback with regards to birthing services in Broome. The Midwifery Group Practice program has been very successful and we are very proud of the exellent care that mothers receive from our experienced midwives through this program.

I acknowledge your comments with regards to other options for birthing and agree that women in Broome should have the same options to explore as women in larger centers when deciding their birth plan. We do support the use of birthing pools, but the physical building and available space that we have currently in our maternity unit makes it impractical and unsafe to use inflatable birth pools.

With regards to expanding birth options for mothers I can inform you that the hospital executive has a main priority in the coming years to source funding for a community birthing center that will allow for a birth experience outside of an acute hospital setting.

Please feel free to call and discuss any of the information above. Congratulations on your new arrival.

Regards

Holly
