"Need a review of the cleaning in isolation rooms."

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

I believe Broome Hospital is first class in patient treatment from medical staff. I have been a patient a few times. Just recently I was in isolation room for several days owing to immune system too low after Chemotherapy. To come into my room staff had to be masked and plastic aprons and strict hygiene of course. The first couple of days I was there, one cleaner came in and seemed to swipe at the wash basin and that's all I saw that was done in those days. After I said something to the staff, the cleaners came every day but seemed to have no concept of cleaning in an isolation room and bathroom. Very poor cleaning standard and perhaps the Hospital needs to look into that side of cleaning in an isolation room. Practical demonstration and the importance of cleaning would be my suggestion!

I have never had bad food before at Broome Hospital but I learnt that they had a different cook (the staff actually apologized to me about the quality of the food).  It was just mainly slop overcooked and even the dessert, unless you had jelly and fruit and ice cream, was inedible, or sandwiches was an option which I had and friends brought food into me. I would also suggest that the food was surely not a menu from a dietitian.

Dear Better Cleaning

It is pleasing to hear that the clinical care delivered by our medical staff was first rate. It was though, disappointing to hear of your concerns in the housekeeping and food service area.

I will look into our approach for training of cleaning staff as generally all staff are trained in appropriate techniques that are universal across the Hospital. Your comments in relation to the food is also of concern but I am not aware of any change recently to permanent cooking staff. There are of course occurrences where regular staff are absent and perhaps this is what you experienced during your admission. Hospital patient menu's are developed in consultation with a Dietitian however the execution of that menu is locally driven.

Thank you for your feedback and I would encourage you for future admissions to contact the Nurse Manager during admission with any concerns so these can be addressed immediately.
