"Communication following my husband's heart surgery"

My husband recently underwent cardiac surgery at The Alfred Hospital.

Following the operation I was not informed of the extent of the surgery or when my husband went to Recovery or ICU.

I was not informed of the extent of his surgery...bypass, double, triple, stents etc.

I eventually rang, that afternoon, to hear he was in ICU. The nurse was unable to tell me the details of his surgery. Information on the type and extent of surgery must be communicated by medical staff. Why was I, the next of kin, not informed by the surgical staff, which is standard practice at Victorian public hospitals?

Late that night I still had not heard & rang again ICU. The surgical registrar returned my call an hour later and read from the notes the details of the operation. He was most apologetic and kind and emphathetic. Thank you.

I live hundred's of kilometres away  and the lack of communication has been most distressing.
