"Closure of service has let us all down."

About: CPL / CPL Southport

(as a parent/guardian),

My child and several class mates, along with the families of these children, were majorly let down by Cerebral Palsy League and their decision to cease providing after school care and vacation care in Southport. Words do not describe how disappointed and let down we feel by an organisation supposedly providing ongoing support. Once again we find ourselves disadvantaged and let down, and by of all people an organisation we thought would understand and support our needs. At present we have no idea if we will be able to continue in our jobs because we are unable to hold down the hours we work, and consequently pay the bills such as mortgages required to simply maintain a stable family home, already disrupted by our reality of disability on a daily basis. Familys, including mine. make decisions based on the reliability of provision of services such as yours. Your decision has caused major upset and uncertainty. It's not always just about the money...... right now CPL, you are no different to all the other barriers we come across in life.

Yesterday I received a letter from your CEO championing CPL and the NDIS.... how can we trust you?

Feeling very let down....

Dear Feeling let down,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I am very sorry to hear of your stress and disappointment about the closure of our Outside School Hours Care and Vacation Care at Southport Special School.

Southport Special School advised us that they were undergoing some extensive construction during the June/July vacation and the September vacation periods. Because of the substantial nature of these works, the school explained that CPL’s Outside School Hours Care program would not be able to use the school as a venue for Vacation Care. CPL was unable to source another venue nearby and therefore forced to cancel the vacation care program. We have loved working with the Southport Special School and recognise that this construction was essential for the school’s future.

Also, because CPL’s After Hours School Care program could only attract a few families, we could no longer maintain the financial losses that this program was bringing. We let all the families know that the YMCA runs before school, after school and vacation care programs from Musgrave Hill State School which is situated directly behind Southport Special School.

Again, I am so sorry for the difficulties this has caused you and your family. If you need any assistance with finding alternative arrangements for Vacation Care and After School Care, please call me on 07 5531 9000 or email me at info@cpl.org.au.

Warm regards,

Kirsty Austin

Regional Manager
