As a 1st/2nd year social work student I felt I needed to extend my learning by volunteering in the community. I applied for a 6mth internship with Drug ARM which was promoted through Uni. The application process involved a similar process of applying for a job (which is good practice), followed by an interview (again, good practice) then four days intensive training on Drug ARM Community and Family Support Services (CAFSS) and Street Outreach Service (SOS) program. This training was excellent, very in-depth knowledge explored about AO&D, Counselling Support, Harm Minimisation, Culture Awareness, Case Management & Noting, Intervention Therapies and Referral to relevant services to support clients. There were ongoing opportunities to role play, question, interact and engage. Powerful and engaging learning for students and volunteers to enable us to implement a pro-active, non-judgmental, harm minimisation approach in a 12 counselling service for clients living with AO&D dependency.
