"I always appreciate the hard working efforts of the nursing staff"

About: Box Hill Hospital

(as a friend),

A very dear friend of mine had a fall at home and was taken to the Box Hill Hospital Emergency. My friend was transferred to a ward where, unfortunately, my friend had a fall on the second night. This fall resulted in surgery. After surgery, my friend was moved to Ward 6.2. My friend was confused and constantly suffering from fear of falling - resulting deprivation of sleep.

A confused patient living in the next room wandered into my friend's room and disturbed their sleep. On one occasion, I also felt threatened because this confused patient demanded to know who I was. I was too scared to look at this patient and reply to this patient so I alerted the nurse who called for security. This patient then taken back to their room.

The next day, I addressed the issue to Maria, Manager of Ward 6.2. She rectified the problem promptly by allocating a nursing staff to settle and supervise this confused patient. My friend then was relieved without disturbance.

Another incident I brought to Maria's attention was the bed of my friend was high with no rails erected when not attended. I was very worried a fatal fall would occur.

I found Maria was compassionate, understanding and an excellent executor. She is a role model of leadership. Her outstanding performance should be recognised.

I always appreciate the hard working efforts of the nursing staff and I believe their services should be recognised by the general public and the industry. But only a small portion of them do not have hearts for the sick and I think they should not engage in the caring industry.

Dear Opositive

Thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion. I am so very sorry to read about the fact your friend had a fall whilst in our care and then required surgery. Regrettably, falls pose such a great risk for patients when they are in hospital. However, I can assure you that we have put a number of strategies in place notwithstanding that they did not prevent a fall on this occasion. Again, I am very sorry about this. I can see that this was then exacerbated for you and your friend when you were approached by another confused patient.

However, I am also delighted to read that Maria was very responsive to your concerns and managed to provide further comfort through her own compassion and understanding. Maria is indeed one of our terrific Nurse Unit Managers and is always energetic, empathetic and professional in her approach. I will be sure to pass on your feedback to her and will drop a line to her manager as well.

Finally, I do hope that your friend is now gaining strength and getting back to good health.

If you require any further follow-up, you are also welcome to write to us at any time to feedback@easternhealth.org.au or you can call our Patient Relations Advisors on 1300 EASTERN.

Kind regards and thanks, Alan Lilly
