I went to the Royal Melbourne Hospital Emergency Department recently after 4 days of migraines, vomiting and dizziness. I have a history of migraines and low blood volume, so none of my symptoms were new, but they normally would have resolved after a day or two.
The staff at the ED were brilliant. They were kind, understanding, and above all respected that, as the patient, I had knowledge about my rare conditions and complex medical history that was worth listening to and taking into consideration.
The doctor in the Short Stay Unit was helpful, took the time to explain the treatment options and why they would help, and offered to continue care if I felt it was necessary.
While I chose to go home, and felt that that was the most appropriate decision, being allowed to have the choice, and feeling as though the staff would support me either way was amazing, and made such a difference to my experience there.
