"Lyell McEwin hospital was insensitive after my mother's death."

About: Lyell McEwin Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Adelaide Hospital

(as a relative),

My mum was sent to emergency at Lyell McEwin Hospital for tests after seeing her gp with severe stomach pain.

After spending all day waiting around she was told to stop taking nurofen and sent home.

The next day she was sent to the Royal Adelaide hospital still with severe stomach pain, she was admitted but it seemed to me they did not do any tests for 2 days and I believe that by that time her condition was inoperable and she passed away that night.

2 months later Lyell McEwin called me and asked why my mum wasn't answering her phone and why she hadn't shown for an appointment they had booked for her. Words can't describe how disgusted I am with that hospital.

This response has been posted by Patient Opinion on behalf of the Lyell McEwin Hospital.

The Lyell McEwin Hospital would like to express our deepest condolences on the loss experienced by the author and our sincere apologies for any further distress that occurred.

The Lyell McEwin Hospital has a process for updating the Out Patient waiting list that involves receiving information from Birth Deaths and Marriages (BDM). Although the reports are run monthly and the list updated at that time, there can be a delay of 2 – 3 months for notification to be received from BDM. The Lyell McEwin Hospital staff are deeply regretful for any distress this delay caused.

We would like to thank the Patient Opinion Website for bringing this to our attention. It is through feedback from patients and their families that we are able to improve the services that we offer to our consumers.
