"Care in the Emergency Department"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

I was travelling from Perth around Australia. I am a male of 78 years.

During my stay in Broome Western Australia, on the morning of the first of July 2024 I became very ill, with severe pain in my stomach.

My wife took me to the emergency department of Broome Hospital, by this time I was unable to walk, and a wheelchair was supplied by the hospital staff.

I was taken to the triage and assessed and then to the admissions, this process was extremely quick and within minutes taken through to the emergency department

A nurse gave me something to calm the pain, and a doctor came to see me within minutes. The doctor decided that I should have a CT scan, this was carried out immediately.

On my return to ED the doctor came and told me I had a burst appendix, she also told me a surgeon would be with me shortly to discuss an operation.

The surgeon arrived soon afterwards and spoke to me at great lengths as to what the procedure entailed and any risks for someone of my age. She said she was unable to carry out the procedure immediately but it would be very soon. The operation took place a couple of hours later.

I had a five day stay in Broome hospital and the surgeon came to see me every day. She had told me that the CT scan also showed a bladder stone. The advice she gave me was to return home and get a colonoscopy as a precaution and visit a urologist with regards to the stone.

Both things have been attended too and I am not fit and well.

Broom Hospital I think you are simply the best, thank you so much to everyone for the care and attention you gave to me. I was always fully informed why I was getting medications and what to expect next.

I cannot pick out any one person as everyone I saw is so dedicated and positive to the wellbeing of the patients.

Once again, a big thanks to everyone in Broome Hospital.

Dear fornaxmj94,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your unexpected visit to Broome Health Campus. I’m so pleased to hear that you received timely, professional, and compassionate care during what must have been a very frightening and painful situation.

It’s wonderful to know that from your arrival at our Emergency Department through to your surgery and recovery, our staff were able to respond quickly and keep you informed and supported every step of the way. We understand how important it is – particularly for older patients – to feel safe, heard, and involved in their own care, and I’m very proud that our team provided you with just that.

Your kind words about the dedication and positivity of our staff mean a great deal to us. I will ensure your thanks are shared across the ED, surgical, and ward teams – they will be heartened to hear that their efforts had such a meaningful impact on your recovery.

It’s also great to hear that you’ve followed up on the advice provided and are now back to full health. We wish you continued wellness on your travels, and thank you again for your generous feedback – it’s a privilege to have been part of your care.

Warm regards,
James Sherriff
