"Second visit in 2 days to ED"

About: Sale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented myself to ED for the second time in as many days as I was having a mental health crisis. It took so much strength to get myself there the first time. The first visit I was treated respectfully and my triage was very discreet. The second visit two day later was the absolute opposite experience. In my opinion, the triage nurse was combative and had no intention of helping me to try and calm down enough to answer their loud questions. I was mortified and further stressed by their approach. When I told them a medication I was taking taking they said oh that will make you feel suicidal. My partner was on it and they had to stop because it made them want to kill themelves.

The triage nurse said they'd give me a leaflet on it and I said I don’t need it right now - their response was - so you don’t want information about the medication you take then?

I live on my own. It’s the first time I’ve found the courage to go to ED because of mental health issues and this treatment has left me feeling extremely disheartened and frightened about how I will handle any future episodes. I believe it’s no wonder people end up harming themselves.

Dear CMTS

My name is Tracy McConnell-Henry, Acting Director of Nursing at Central Gippsland Health Service.

What you’ve described is not the experience we want anyone to have when they seek care, especially not during such an intensely difficult time. While it’s clear the experience was distressing, I want to acknowledge that I believe the triage nurse did escalate your case appropriately and liaised with the mental health team, which shows they genuinely wanted to help. That said, even with good intentions, the way the interaction felt to you, especially in such a vulnerable moment matters deeply. The tone and manner of communication left you feeling more distressed, and I’m truly sorry for that.

If you wish to talk further, please don’t hesitate to contact me on phone 5143 8660 or via email at Tracy.McConnell-Henry@cghs.com.au.

Kind Regards

Tracy McConnell-Henry
