"Recent miscarriage experience"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to King Edward Memorial hospital because I was experiencing blood loss. After being kept waiting for 4 hours on a chair with a terrible back and tummy sore, the examinations started. The followup apoointment was a few days later for a blood test to confirm if I was miscarrying. I did the blood work and was told it would be ready within 30mins to 1 hour. I was kept waiting for almost 5 hours.

During this time, myself not being in the right state of mind thinking about what is happening to my baby; I was left waiting on a chair with my excruciating pain. While I was emotionally challenged, I remember bursting into tears seeing a newborn baby with his parents while thinking about I might be losing mine. I was by myself for this appointment. The nurses walking by not bothering to ask me if I was okay. I had to go through all these traumas for 5 hours only to read me the results that sorry you have miscarried, nothing less, nothing more. The reason I was called after the 5 hours of waiting was when I went to ask the receptionist if I have to stay here or my GP could read me the results then I would like it to be sent to him and I wanted to get out of there. But then  I was called in within 5 minutes and they apologised to have kept me waiting.

This is very wrong. Going through an emotional and physical rollercoaster and to be left on a chair for hours. While I understand I went through emergency; but it is not fair to anyone to have to wait for hours just to give a sad news.

Dear Bibi

I would like to express my condolences for your pregnancy loss. I am truly sorry to hear about your experiences at the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) Emergency Centre (EC). It is incredibly disappointing to hear about your experience, including the distressing wait for your results, and I regret that we didn’t do more to make you comfortable and supported during this time.

If you feel comfortable doing so, I encourage you to reach out to our Consumer Liaison Team by phone at 6458 1444 or via email at WNHSCLS@health.wa.gov.au. They will put you in contact with a senior member of our Nursing and Midwifery team who would appreciate the opportunity to offer you a direct apology and undertake review your care in more detail.

I hope we hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Delaney
