"Children’s Ward Positive Feedback"

About: St George Hospital / 1 East Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

On Saturday morning at 3:30am I rushed my 4 year old son to emergency with a bad case of croup. From start to finish all staff were extremely helpful. Once we arrived I gave my details and explained my son had autism, was non verbal and gets very overwhelmed when we have been to the hospital in the past.

We were taken straight through to the children’s ward and given a bed. I was wearing my son’s sunflower lanyard which the doctor pick up on immediately. I briefly explained that we’ve been through this process before and that there were ways to help my son get through this without big feelings erupting. The nurses and doctors were so accommodating. They always asked me before performing any procedures, and asked what the best way to do this was, they watched him from afar, they allowed me to administer his medication and were there to support me when I needed it.

I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone. We have had many many terrible visits to hospitals and doctors in the past. This would have to have been the calmest visit for my son so far (he was overwhelmed for a lot of it but we never progressed to full meltdown, which has never happened before). I believe it’s rare that people know how to support parents navigating children with autism. It’s something that I struggle with every time we go out in public. I was so grateful to have received this support. I would love for this feedback to be passed onto the staff working in the children’s ward early on Saturday (22nd) morning. I don’t think I relayed how much I appreciated them, I was just eager to get my cranky boy home to his safe space.

Dear serpensez94,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience in the Emergency Department and Paediatric ward at St George Hospital. I am heartened to hear that your experience was positive and that your son received individualised compassionate care. Our staff work diligently to ensure that every patient and their family feels supported and comfortable, and it is heartwarming to hear that their efforts made a meaningful difference for you and your son.

While no thanks are expected, I am sure the staff in the Children’s ward will greatly appreciate the wonderful acknowledgement you have given them. I have forwarded your feedback to the Women’s and Children’s Leadership Team to share with the Paediatrics team as they will be delighted to hear your appreciation.

Your feedback is invaluable to us, and I thank you for entrusting us with your family’s care. We wish your family the very best.

Warm regards,

Ange Karooz
