I work in a remote Aboriginal community at the clinic and I frequently contact Radiology regarding patient appointments. A few months ago I sent through a referral for myself. A week and a half later we needed to go to our nearest town, so I rang Kununurra radiology to follow up and see if the appointment was soon as it can be very difficult to get to appointments during the wet season when the roads are closed.
They had my referral and I was told that the sonographer needed to look at it first to prioritise incoming referrals. That was fine with me as I know that ultrasounds are difficult to get sometimes. Recently I had to chase up an US appointment for a patient that needed to be organised around a Telehealth appointment. I was again told that the sonographer needed to look at it first to prioritise incoming referrals. While I was on the phone, I followed up and asked about my referral. The staff member checked my name and DOB and then said that they had tried to ring the patient but they hadn't answered the phone, so messages had been left. I asked which phone number they had tried and they said that both numbers had been tried. I then said that they were my numbers and that I had had no missed calls or messages left on either phone. The staff member read aloud my mobile number which was correct and then my landline which she said a 1 instead of a 7. I said that was incorrect and then they said 'oh yes, that is the number we have'.
My concern is that I believe I was lied to and there was no need for that. Just tell me that an appointment hasn't been made yet. Does that person think that because the appointment came from a remote community that they can get away with lying, as I believe they did, as it is common for numbers to be unanswered or out of date?
Be honest!
